Disappointment for Marist as Marys clinch Connacht Cup

Connacht Senior Cup Final

St. Marys Galway 4
Marist College Athlone 1

Scott Gaynor

Terryland Park

The Marist College Senior Soccer side suffered huge disappointment last Tuesday night as their hopes of claiming the senior Connacht title went up in smoke as Marys came out on top in a 4-1 score-line at Terryland Park. Marist, who registered their only goal on the night via a Kevin Horan penalty, advanced to the final as a result of a win against St. Endas in the semi-final, but unfortunately they couldn’t take that extra step to claim the silverware for the Midland school who celebrate their 125th year.

Speaking after the match, Marist College manager Antony Sherlock conceded that the best team had won on the night, and was left to rue his side’s missed opportunities.

“The best team won; no doubt about that. However if we took some of our early chances it would have been a very different game. We really went at them for the first hour but we just ran out of steam and they punished us like all good teams do; simple as that! We have had good clashes with this St. Marys team since the boys were in first year and they have always been good, honest, tough matches played in the right spirit. I am gutted to lose, as I always am, but I am very proud of the players to have reached this stage against all the odds. Their application, attitude and sporting behaviour throughout the campaign has been excellent. They are an excellent group of young men who are excellent ambassadors for their families, our school and their clubs.” said the Athlone Town coach.
